Chateau de Sours is a truly captivating place, fascinating and intriguing in equal measure. A Bordeaux estate dating back to the 15th century where wine, nature, architecture and man exist in natural harmony.
Making the most of the estate's terroirs
The 60 or so hectares devoted to the growing of grapes comprise several terroirs exhibiting a vast diversity of soil types depending on location. The handcrafted, precision approach aligns firmly with the vision of the owner and new management team, and is embodied in the day-to-day work carried out in the vineyard. Since the arrival of Sebastien Jacquey, the vineyard has been meticulously dissected into subplots that display a similar profile; the red grape terroirs are of considerable quality, consisting of exposed clay-limestone soils similar to those found near the Saint-Émilion plateau. Cooler terroirs suited to the production of white wine have also been identified. This in-depth understanding of the terroir is integral to the precision-viticulture approach adopted on the estate. As a result, the grapes are meticulously selected in an essential step towards crafting excellent quality wines, while the finest sites are assigned for the production of several fine wines.

Shaping the identity of the wines
Shaping the identity of the wines
For the design and build of the new winery, in a bid to produce the finest wines possible, the owner resolutely focused on high-performance, functional, state-of-the-art facilities, eschewing the quest to create an architectural showpiece. The new vat room is entirely adaptable and capable of vinifying grapes from individual plots to preserve their intrinsic character, while instilling the precision required to define and craft distinctive wines. The project was launched in December 2020 and the winery completed less than two years later, receiving its first harvest in 2022.

The range has been entirely redeveloped to form a collection of wines that showcase the estate’s distinctive Bordeaux grape varieties and unique terroirs.
The Quarry Collection
The Quarry Collection
A nod to the former quarry on the estate and the subsoil from which the vine draws its character, this collection of three wines captures the very essence of the terroirs around the quarry. The wines are defined by elegance and harmony. Grapes are selected from highly-specific plots, characterised by poor soils overlying an exposed limestone bedrock. The result is a delicate red wine, a well-balanced and fresh white wine, and a gossamer-light sparkling white. Quarry wines are presented in Burgundy bottles to underscore their unique character.
Essences Collection
Essences Collection
« Les Essences de Sours » is a collection of five varietal wines capturing the quintessence of the estate’s signature style. The wines are packed with delicious flavour and deliver excellent value. Here we find the same elevated standards of viticulture and winemaking usually associated with more premium collections, the only difference being the selection of the grapes. The resulting wines are eminently drinkable and exude character. The elegant, contemporary packaging reflects the stunning colour palette of the gardens on the estate.
